WE ARE MOVING!
Dear Friends,
After more than twenty-one years at our current premises, we are saying goodbye to 1214 High Street, Armadale.
We will be looking forward to welcoming you at our new home at 322-324 Lennox Street, Richmond.
With the move comes the name change, and our gallery will be known henceforth as Lennox St. Gallery.
Our new name acknowledges our gallery’s new location within the heart of Richmond’s arts precinct and the street’s historic association with the surrounding galleries and artists’ studios.
Lennox St. Gallery will take over the former premises of Hellas Cakes, an iconic institution which opened in 1962. It remained in the hands of the original owners’ descendants who were pleased to know that the legacy of serving Australia’s diverse and multicultural arts community will continue, albeit in a different fashion.
Our new façade is reimagined by Jackson Clements Burrows Architects, who have delivered a diverse range of projects throughout Australia and abroad. Many of their projects have been recognised through RAIA and Industry awards.
Jackson Clements Burrows’s design will pay homage to Hellas Cakes’ original Lennox Street frontage while interacting with the passing pedestrian and vehicular traffic through the gallery’s extensive front windows.
Lennox St. Gallery’s interior has been entrusted to Studio Tate, an internationally renowned, award-winning design practice. In a similar vein to the gallery’s exterior, Studio Tate will preserve some of the iconic aspects of the original building (including a clever conversion of the former walk-in fridge into the director’s office).
The former industrial kitchens in the heart of the building will be transformed into contemporary art spaces, suited for the display of traditional and innovative art practices. Our extensive and enlarged open-access stockrooms will enhance the visibility of our artists to the gallery’s visitors.
To ‘sing in’ the new space, our exhibition line-up for 2023 will feature solo presentations by Jorna Newberry, Luke Cornish (E.L.K), Jim Thalassoudis, Loribelle Spirovski, Bettina Willner, Anthony White, ADNATE, James Money, Dianne Gall, Tom Gerrard, Eolo Paul Bottaro, Jackie Wirramanda, and Robby Wirramanda, among others.
We will be closing our doors at 1214 High Street, Armadale, on Wednesday, 30 November 2022.
We will notify you about the launch dates and opening celebrations at 322-324 Lennox Street, Richmond, in due course.
In the meantime, we thank you for your custom and support over the intervening twenty-one years.
With Kind Regards,
Barry | Helen | Ken | Eugene | Kathleen | Lola | Sean
