Donovan Christie is living in the past – in the very best way. His paintings of retro milk bars and video stores are dripping with nostalgia.
His latest exhibition, Everyday’s A Birthday, delves into the holy grail of ’80s and ’90s childhood: the Australian Women’s Weekly Children’s Birthday Cake Book.
This exhibition, which is currently on display at Lennox St Gallery in Richmond, includes seven hyperrealistic oil paintings and seven drawings. There’s also a central table that acts as a limited edition sculptural installation decked out to look as if it’s been snapped mid-birthday party.
