Please join us for the private viewing of his exhibition on Wednesday, 23 August, 6-8pm.
The exhibition continues James’s fascination with the Australian fauna, and especially its bird species. These are not anatomically correct depictions of the birds, but rather the artist’s highly individual renditions of them.
The wrens, painted larger than life, are imbued with anthropomorphic qualities and stand in as a synecdoche for the artist’s self-portraits.
His ibises are at once majestic and threatening as the direct descendants of their ferocious dinosaur ancestors.
Among the most remarkable aspects of the exhibition is James’s attention to detail and execution of individual pieces, demonstrating complex textures, layering of pigments, and cross-hatching work.
