Josh Foley is a contemporary artist from Tasmania, Australia. Foley's practice primarily revolves around painting, but he also works with mixed media and installation art. His artworks often explore the relationship between the natural environment and human culture, as well as the intersection of the past and present.
Born in 1983 in Launceston, Tasmania, Foley studied at the School of Visual and Performing Arts, UTAS, where he received a Bachelor of Contemporary Arts with Honours in 2004. After completing his studies, he continued to hone his craft and gain recognition through various group exhibitions, including the Hutchins Art Prize and the EMSLA art prize in Coffs Harbour.
In 2011 Josh won The John Glover Prize which was then the richest landscape prize in Australia. Winning this award at the age of 27 Josh remains the youngest person to achieve this. Anthony Bond OAM, speaking in 2011, then Curator of International Art at the Art Gallery of New South Wales and head judge of the Glover prize 2011, said of Josh’s work; it’s “…talking about the whole history of the conventions of western painting.” This marked a turning point in his career, providing him with the exposure and recognition to establish himself as one of Tasmania's most promising emerging artists.
Foley's artworks are characterized by his unique technique of layering translucent glazes of colour over each other, as well as impasto to create a sense of depth and luminosity. His works often incorporate subtle imagery and symbolism, referencing historical and cultural themes.
Josh has exhibited extensively throughout Australia and has received prestigious awards, grants and residencies. His work is held in many public and private collections throughout Australia and the U.S.A., notably, in the collections of the Queen Victoria Museum & Art Gallery, MONA, Tasmanian Government, Macquarie Bank, ArtBank & University of Tasmania.
His recent works continue to push the boundaries of his medium, exploring new techniques and ideas. His art has received critical acclaim for its sensitivity, depth, and beauty, and has cemented his place as one of Australia's most innovative and important artists.
