Works in Christopher Jewitt’s exhibition, ‘The Edge of Form’, reference the artist’s recent expansion beyond the limits of picture plane and his playful re-imagining of the frame. Simultaneously ordered and chaotic, his paintings pulsate with vivid colours. They evoke the nocturnal metropolis, captured with a slow-exposure and the resulting image overlay. In these paintings, the viewer may find references to the urban environment, the oversaturation of neon signage, and the street graffiti of Keith Haring and Jean-Michel Basquiat. Bold pigment application results in equally vibrant and richly textured surfaces, which, in turn, are echoed in increasingly complex ceramic frames that expand on both the iconography and texturality of painted surfaces within the frame. Titles of artworks, at times, offer a key to the visual rebus, or, at times, obfuscate the meaning, significance, and intent of these vibrantly unique pieces.
Painter and ceramicist, the Melbourne-based artist has held solo exhibitions since the mid-2010s in Melbourne, Sydney, Chalais (France), and Murcia (Spain). His works were included in curated group exhibitions at the Nankai University (Tianjin, China), George Paton Gallery (Carlton, Melbourne), and Sydney Contemporary Art Fair. He was awarded residencies in Palermo (Italy), Chalais (France), and Murcia (Spain). The artist’s works reside in corporate and private collections in Australia and abroad.
