The title of Tom Gerrard’s exhibition, '20 Shot Sequence', references a 1994 iconic video by World Industries, which provides an insight into the complex skateboarding moves through a sequence of twenty shots. Paintings in the exhibition, in a similar vein, narrate Tom’s recent experiences, twenty frames at a time, whether within a single painting or across a series of panels. They reveal the artist’s acute sense of observation and an unquenchable thirst for drawing. Vignettes within multi-panel paintings as well as single images depict exteriors and interiors of places Tom had visited or lived; snapshots of intimate domesticity; continuous interest in urban detritus; elegant drawings of plants; as well as the artist’s ubiquitous ‘faces’. Each work is executed with spray paint and airbrush, demonstrating Tom’s dexterity and complete mastery of his chosen medium.
Painter, muralist, and ceramicist, Tom Gerrard has held solo exhibitions since the early 2000s in Melbourne, Barcelona, Tokyo, and London; in 2018, Benalla Art Gallery hosted a survey exhibition of the artist’s works, Dead Set Legends. Tom’s works were included in important curated exhibitions at the National Gallery of Australia, Raval Academy of Arts in Barcelona, Wollongong Art Gallery (NSW), SH Irvin Gallery (Sydney). His paintings had appeared, most recently, in The Outsiders: The Sandrew Collection in Melbourne (2025) and at the Sydney Contemporary Art Fair (2025). Tom’s works have been acquired by the National Gallery of Australia, National Gallery of Victoria, as well as notable corporate and private collections across Australia and overseas. Tom’s murals grace prominent sites around the globe, Including London, Berlin, Quito, Rio de Janeiro, and Melbourne. The artist currently lives and works in Melbourne.
