Andrew McIlroy

“In the past I have written about conveying emotion in art, how consciously courting specific emotional responses can assist audiences traverse differing styles and genres and thematically unify an artist’s otherwise diverse body of work.

But I’ve come to realise this critique does not add anything of genuine value because the impact of the circumstances in which the art is created is all that truly matters.

An artist’s value then lies inuniquely making sense of the swirling chaos or the beauty of things around themat a particular time. I believe this is especially true in landscape painting.

There is nothing we can add to nature’s presentation of itself.  We just paint what we see in the moment.

So what makes an artwork special?

For me, it is found in the act of making, the technique that will uniquely define the work and give it energy and purpose, and ultimately come to define the artist themselves.”
