The title of the painting comes from the line of Sing for Joy, a dark song by Frank Black. The painting depicts a bunch of pinkish-mauve hyacinths in a glass beaker, with a toy yellow bird on the left, a small skull on the right, and a pink sprig of orchid in the foreground to the right of centre. The flowers and the skull represent the vanitas, and the sad story associated with Hyacinth in Greek mythology; although the yellow canary is traditionally a bearer of good fortune and positive energies.
